Source : NASSCOM Abhishek Rungta is the Founder & CEO of Indus Net Technologies, a premiere web development and digital marketing company with offices and subsidiaries in India, UK and USA. Indus Net has rated as #1 IT SME by Dun & Bradstreet, and also ranked in Deloitte Technology Fast 50India. Abhishek graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and did his Masters from University of Bath, UK. He is also Co-Founder of Seeders Venture Capital which is an angel investment firm. Q: What in your opinion are going to the key trends and disruptions that will drive the growth of the global tech industry? We are moving towards ubiquitous computing—connected devices, mobile applications, wearable computers, mashups of different apps, that are resulting in contextual, actionable knowledge and creating new opportunities. Applications, solutions and management tools need to be developed to leverage these emerging platforms. A new wave of innovation is simply waiting on the horizon. Very important trends to watch out for are mobile apps, smart TV apps and social mashups. We can also expect to see major movement in the areas of data storage and computing that will veer towards Cloud infrastructure. Last but not the least, the form of interaction is set to change from typing to clicks to touch to gesture to voice. This is finally coming into practical computing now. Q: How is Indus addressing these trends? “As consumers begin using the Internet and the mobile, our clients will need to have more innovative Cloud, mobile and social strategies for their businesses”Indus is playing a critical role, right at the heart of these changes. We are developing user-friendly enterprise mobile solutions to enable organisations to achieve productivity and profitability. We have invested heavily in creating innovative mobile and web products for the BFSI vertical to ensure seamless operational efficiency across these organisations, especially in top-line focused activities. We are additionally working with media houses to create unique social TV experiences for their audience. We are working on gesture and surface computing, conceptualising new ways. Q: What are the customer segments and verticals that you are targeting? We are primarily focused on the BFSI (specially Insurance) and e-governance verticals and in the process of developing solutions for media, entertainment and publishing sectors. Q: What do you feel are the main challenges being faced by the BFSI segment and how are you helping resole these? Our decade-long experience in the BFSI segment in the European markets tells us that the biggest challenges faced by this vertical are product distribution and risk mitigation. We have innovative solutions which work with existing core systems to enhance and improve the distribution of financial products through multiple channels. We use the power of mobile technology (primarily tabs) and social media to achieve the same. Indus is offering solutions for all the layers, i.e. manufacturers (i.e. insurance companies, banks and financial services companies), distributors (agents, brokers, etc.) as well as end consumers. We are bridging the gaps in the sales and distribution process to help companies increase their top line. Q: How are your Cloud solutions levelling the playing field for your SMB clients? What are you offering your smaller customers? Cloud solutions allow you to pay for what you use, when you use it and scale up as demand increases. Thus they can gain access to enterprise solutions even though they are small, at affordable prices. Our Cloud based solutions are helping these companies reduce their infrastructure costs, since infrastructure is available as a services, providing them ‘on-demand’ IT resources at rock-bottom prices. We offer hosted solutions to our clients and our billing is based on usage, which is the primary premise of cloud computing. Q: With the Internet and mobility proliferating at a rapid rate in India, how do you perceive the opportunities presented to the country’s domestic market and your role here? Internet and mobility will bring all the users into the mainstream. As a company, we are leveraging the Internet and mobile platforms and hence, opening up a floodgate of opportunities for your customers. As more and more consumers begin using the Internet and the mobile, our clients will need to have more innovative Cloud, mobile and social strategies for their businesses. This will keep us on the innovation curve and we will continue to help our client grow using these three technology forces. We see a lot of work happening in segments such as BSFI, retail, media and entertainment and of course e-governance. This is where we have positioned ourselves and are creating opportunities.

Introduction to M-Learning

M-Learning, or “mobile learning,” is a form of learning through mobile devices. It is a flexible form of learning, as you do not need to be at a predetermined location at a predefined time. You can take up learning at your own convenience even while you are on the go using portable devices like mobile phones, MP3 players, or tablets. Like any other form of learning, m-learning also offers collaboration among students and instructors, and instant tips and feedback can be shared. Mobile learning technology refers to the use of portable digital devices to support education, and a mobile learning application is a software tool designed within this technology to deliver learning content anytime and anywhere. M-learning is the next big revolution in mobile technology. E-learning is passé, and M-learning is the beckoning future. The capabilities of mobile devices are gradually increasing, which is facilitating further development in M-Learning technology. When the concept of M-Learning evolved a decade ago, no one imagined that it would undergo such phenomenal development. Thanks to the rapid growth in mobile technology and the evolution of mobile phones into smartphones. Types of M-Learning M-Learning comes in various flavors, as discussed below: Mobile learning has transformed traditional learning by making education accessible anytime and anywhere. I am learning through mobile learning, which allows me to study anytime and anywhere using my smartphone or tablet. M-learning, also known as mobile learning, is a form of education that uses mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to enable learning anytime and anywhere. mVLE-Based Learning This is an extension to virtual learning environments like Moodle and Atlas. These e-learning providers have started offering mobile apps for facilitating learning through smartphones. So mobile users can take advantage of activities happening in the non-mobile version of the environment. App-based learning There are specific mobile apps that help in improving vocabulary, mathematics, and other skills. This is kind of discrete learning. This method supports interactive learning and hence works pretty well. There are free and paid apps available on different platforms in the app stores, which can be installed on the smartphone to begin study. Podcasting It is a form of passive learning wherein the study materials are provided in the form of audio files. These can be played using mobile phones or MP3 players. Podcasting is more effective if it is accompanied by related slides and videos. If the audio podcast is instructional and allows users to follow certain instructions and perform task while listening to the podcast, it becomes more effective. Augmented Reality Based Learning Augmented reality is a direct or indirect view of a real world based on the images captured through mobile phone camera and using the GPS. This technology can be utilized to impart M-Learning in a sophisticated way. Through Augmented Reality based learning users can input information and interact with other users as well. The HARP (Handheld Augmented Reality Project) project from Harvard University is based on an Augmented reality game to teach students Math and Science. Experience Based Learning This is a mode of learning that utilizes the device functionalities like GPS, Camera to enhance the user experience while learning. Students can share information on the fly while on a field visit. Content Delivery Based Learning This is another passive learning. The learning materials can be distributed in the form of ebooks, SCORM packages or html files to be read in mobile devices. These method is mostly available for Smart phones. Game Based Learning Game based learning is a very effective way of teaching with highest memory retention. This method is quite popular in offline learning as well as in E-learning. Due to the development in mobile technology it has now been offered through mobile too. Social Learning Social learning is also known as collaborative learning. This involves users networking with other users as well as peers using social network. Social Networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are facilitating this with their mobile apps. Technical Approach to M-Learning While building M-Learning products and services the sole goal is to reach the maximum possible audience. This means the technology used to build it, should be supported on wide range of devices. With that said, cross platform technology for building apps or relying on mobile web is the only option at hand. The existing web standards like HTML, JavaScripts and CSS can be used in imparting M-Learning through mVLE and content delivery methods. The rapid development in Cross platform Frameworks like PhoneGap and Titanium enables cross platform applications to access device features which were only recently been possible through native apps. This approach is fulfilling much of the limitations offered by web approach. However for Game based learning or Augmented Reality based learning which requires sophisticated 3D technology no other substitute is available then going through the native apps and porting it to different platforms. The image below shows technical approach for various M-Learning techniques: Few M-Learning Mobile Apps As we discussed above, there are variety of M-Learning techniques. Some may require you to download an App and some can be done without use of any dedicated apps. Given below are few useful mobile apps related to M-Learning: Moodle Mobile Moodle Mobile is an extension of Moodle web. With the help of this app, you can get connected to your Moodle account and track progress of your course as well as take up course from your mobile. Top 10 Local Search Optimization Ranking Factors

Local Search Ranking Factors depend on a number of things that businesses do online, to promote their products and services. David Mihm, who is a well respected Local Search Ranking expert, released a comprehensive list of factors, which he updates each year. Here is what we think about the top 10 Local Search Ranking Factors that he speaks about. Physical Address in City of Search It is very important to make sure that a business’ physical address matches the city in which the company must be listed. Having an address in London and listing it under New York City may not be a very great SEO technique. However, when a company may have operations in different cities but has only one physical address, mentioning that could be a good idea. Manual Verification of Business Ownership It is now possible to verify that your business belongs to you, by asking Google to send a postcard to the physical address which can later be returned to Google to complete the verification process. This service is available in most countries except a few. In such cases, one might want to contact other search engines like Yandex, if you are in Russia or Baidu if the business is located in China. The driving point is to validate a business’ physical existence in a particular city with the help of a search engine. In most cases, it just happens to be Google. Correct Category Associations While listing your business in Google Places or in yellow pages online, it is important to make sure that it is listed under the right business category. Looking at similar advertisements and listings could help you to decide under which category your business belongs. Traditional Structured Citations It is important to make sure that your business is also listed in traditional and conventional listings which include yellow pages, classifieds and other such listings. Getting listed on local portals and local sites help a lot too, and that adds up to the credibility of your business being important to the place you want to optimize your name under. Listing Company Address Though many companies frown at this idea, it is a very important step to make sure that your business is crawlable. When a business address is listed in a company’s website, it not only adds credibility but becomes easier for search engines to recognize your business is local. Well-ranked Company Website It is of course important to have a website which is search engine ranked. it must be well ranked in order to make sure that it is crawlable and listed high in order of importance. Following SEO techniques of keeping metadata clean and using appropriate keywords, not indulging in unfair SEO practices, and publishing quality content in a consistent and timely manner help to increase a site’s ranking. Moreover, getting links from higher pagerank sites would increase a page’s pagerank as well, ultimately resulting in better search engine ranking. High-quality Inbound Links This is an area that most companies find difficult to understand. Companies need to makes sure that internal links to their own sites are provided appropriately. However the links should be relevant and appropriate to the published matter. Company Phone Number A phone number has psychological implications of immediacy, availability and reliability. Thus, when you list your company’s phone number, it automatically helps people to recognize that your business is reliable in local contexts. The key is to have a local number and listing it in a manner so that it is crawlable. Using 800 numbers may not be advisable as they don’t give the local flavor. Local Area Code on Google Places Of course, any local ranking factor depends on your presence on Google Places. It is important to add a zip code or area code, as that can be searched by web crawlers too. by doing so, your business tends to becomes searchable based on exact location within a city. Location in Page Title It can be very useful to have the city and state in which your business is located in, within the page title of Google Places landing page. While address can always be mentioned within content, it is equally important to mention the city and state within page title. Apart from these 10 factors, there are a few more ways to improve local ranking. It is always prudent to go through all the reviews that your business may have received. More the number of reviews, the better it would be for local ranking. It is not necessary that one must have only positive reviews. Negative reviews could be used to correct what is wrong within the organization. Of course, requesting for reviews isn’t such a bad idea either if done in an acceptable and honest manner. Having a presence on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter is very important. One could invite target audience to like a page or get them to follow you on Twitter. This could be a novel method to let people in your business’ vicinity know if you have discounts and offers. Most people discover local business with the help of their GPS-enabled smartphones and maps. Thus, optimizing your website for mobile devices and making sure that you are available on Foursquare and other check-in services may help people to find you, when they use Google Maps, or any other map service for that matter. All this might sound like work, but there is nothing better than having a strong local presence for the success of your business. It might take a while, but eventually all the handwork will pay off.

10 Tips for Optimizing Your Website For SmartPhones

A new research by Canalys revealed that global smartphone shipments overtook client PC sales. More people bought smartphones that ran on iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile OS than they bought personal computers in the form of desktops, laptops, netbooks and tablets. This leads one to believe that Internet traffic will be driven by smartphone users and websites need to be mobile device optimized now, more than ever in the past. Until now, web designers concentrated on designing websites that were well-suited to open flawlessly on major browsers. With the increase in smartphone-driven Internet traffic, web designers need to make that webpages are compatible with different mobile devices that run on complex mobile operating systems. Thus, mobile development is cross-platform and cross-browser at the same time. With serious bandwidth, screen-size, platform and interface deficits, mobile devices present challenges that were unknown to web designers of yesteryears. Here are 10 important aspects to keep in mind, while optimizing webpages for smartphones. Precision of Content Precision of content is an important feature a web designer must keep in mind while designing mobile-optimized websites. Reduced screen size and lower resolutions mean that each pixel is valuable and only relevant content must be optimized. Low priority content can be hidden or removed altogether. Images and videos must be optimized to suit a small screen and content must be very focused. Horizontal scrolling must be avoided and as much as possible, vertical scrolling must be used. Single Column Layouts As the screen size is reduced, users would have to skewer their eyes in order to be able to read text comfortably. Even when the text can be maximized and increased in size with the help of zoom, users would not like it when content appears in two or more columns. Thus, it is very important that vertical scrolling and single column formats are adopted. Interface and Navigation An intuitive mobile website renders information in the least confusing manner and the lowest number of clicks and taps possible. Making sure that there is always a search box near the logo on the landing page allows users to type keywords and retrieve information intuitively. Curtailing Text-entry  Dropdown menus are always preferable to keying in text. Pre-fill options, automated input using GPS and suggestive options help in creating intuitive websites. Parallel Versions of Mobile Websites While most smartphones today have a good resolution above 480 x 800, there are older cellphones which have screen resolutions of 128 x 160 pixels. A mobile website that is designed for a larger resolution screen will never look tidy or synchronized on a screen with a smaller resolution. As a designer, one may have to design parallel versions of mobile websites for lower and mid-level resolution screens. Touchscreen and Non-touchscreen Devices With an increasing number of people using touchscreen-only devices, web designers might be tempted to design sites that are touch-optimized. Doing so would alienate users that still use certain models of smartphones by BlackBerry and other companies, which sometimes have QWERTY keypads and no touchscreens. Location Tracking Optimizing a website to track a user’s location can give valuable information to owners of the website. This information is usually used to help users discover things and people nearby that matter to them. It may also help in driving contextual content to a user’s screen. Communication It is important to make sure that communication takes place effectively and intuitively in fewer numbers of clicks and taps. Telephone numbers on the websites must be enabled to be dialed directly, and clicking on email addresses should direct the user to email applications within the smartphone. Social Media With the advent of social media, website designers should design sites in such a way that content can be shared across Twitter, Facebook, Google+ Tumblr, Reddit and other social bookmarking and networking sites. Minimalism A web designer must always try to keep information, content, media and even design to the bare minimum. When there is very little real estate available, space is very valuable and that is just the case in mobile websites. As of December 2011, Android devices held 47.3% of market share, Apple’s iOS held 29.6% of market share, RIM’s BlackBerry OS a share of 16%, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile has a market share of 4.7% and only 1.4% of smartphone users used a Symbian device. Web designers would however need to keep in mind that all of these operating systems are equally important and while designing a website, one must optimize sites for every major platform. We, at Indus Net Technologies can help you optimize your website for smartphones or develop one from scratch.
