Is Cloud Application Development for You?

Developing applications on a cloud-based platform entails your development team acquiring suitable skill sets. Despite its challenges, it distinctly leverages the capability of your organization. Cloud application development can be done in SaaS (Software as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service).  According to a recent Gartner report, “Enterprise IT spending on public cloud computing, within addressable market segments, will overtake spending on traditional IT in 2025. In 2022, more than $1.3 trillion in enterprise IT spending is at stake from the shift to cloud, growing to almost $1.8 trillion in 2025.” The statistics clearly indicate that cloud application development is becoming crucial for organizations’ IT mix. Developing applications in the cloud comes with ample benefits like: Enabling developers to take virtual snapshots of troubling applications Leveraging economies of scale Improving productivity Cost efficiency and lifecycle management Challenges faced by developers Due to its ability to run the same program on many different systems, Java is one of the top cloud programming languages. Here we have listed some of the unique challenges faced by Java developers during development: 1.      Fragmented data As the business grows, the number of cloud applications deployed increases. Every application solves a different business problem. But this has resulted in fragmentation of business data across various disconnected applications. Developers are increasingly using low-code platforms to build applications. Though data can be easily tracked and may look to be at the same place, it is actually fragmented. Writing custom point-to-point integration in APIs or by adopting a standalone cloud integration platform like Zapier, Dell Boomi or Informatica, can solve this problem. Nonetheless, this task does require a specialized skill set in the development team.  2.      Understanding application resource dependencies A cloud application often runs in a distributed environment with at least two servers deployed for the operation. The primary focus for a developer is to understand application service dependencies. Application service dependencies include databases, message servers etc. In a cloud environment, several services interact amongst each other and developers can’t be sure what IP address the application uses. On the contrary, in a traditional application development environment, identification of resources is easy and a developer knows what service is being used by the application on deployment. Hence, the developer needs to understand service usability and be able to locate resources. Quite often, developers use a discovery pattern to find the services. In a Java application environment, the developer gets JNDI (Java Naming and Directory Interface) that helps in locating the services required. Resource mapping during deployment helps developers to avoid hard coding by following a logical sequence. 3.      Addressing horizontal scalability In cloud computing, horizontal scalability is the ability of the application to connect with multiple hardware or software such as servers when required. The connection enables the whole system to function as a single logical unit. Cloud applications, owing to their parental nature, are horizontally scalable. But unfortunately, not all applications are horizontally scalable.  This issue can be resolved by writing applications in a manner that renders them potentially scalable. 4.      Precautionary measures Localizing data storage can be fatal to your cloud infrastructure. The essence of cloud computing is to have distributed data management to dodge server failures. Furthermore, developers must rely on location patterns to abstract physical IPs rather than using physical IP or disk-based locators to find out resources for using in the application. 5.      Testing application in the cloud Developers often face the challenge of testing the application in a cloud environment. The transition process of application from the local environment to the cloud environment for testing is not free from glitches. Only a smooth transition will ensure product development cycle. So, the use of appropriate testing tools is important for a smooth transition. 6.      Inability to differentiate The majority of the organizations are relying on the same technology and same cloud-based platforms. So, it has become difficult for them to offer unique features to their clients. This undermines their ability to gain a competitive edge over others. No doubt, the development of cloud applications is cheaper and more efficient. But developers need to devise new capabilities, new strategies and follow an innovation-driven approach to entice their clients. Advantages of application development in the cloud The leading cloud-based development platforms in PaaS and IaaS include Google App Engine, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Salesforce.com. Metrics review has already proven that cloud application development offers a lot of benefits like: 1.      Save application development and deployment time The application development time in the cloud is significantly lowered owing to the cloud platform’s ability to streamline the development process. The platform is further capable of quickly getting development assets online. Traditionally, the development of custom applications used to take months as developing a complete application required additional components. However, with cloud computing services, developers can quickly avail all the required software and tools in the cloud working their way out more efficiently. Yet another feather in our hat! Indian Chamber of Commerce, the premier business and industry body in Eastern & North-Eastern India, launched its refurbished website yesterday; and team Indus Net Technologies(INT.) was the digital partner for this website revamp. ICC and Indus Net joined hands to give a facelift to the old website of ICC, with a brand new mobile-friendly design. This redesigning of the website was done keeping in mind the benefit of its members and staff & the Indian Entrepreneurs’ community at large. ICC partnered with Indus Net(INT.) for the full-scale redesign of their website, which has well-catered to people for the past six years, with a brand new design that includes contemporary responsive design trends. INT was chosen for this website revamp project because of its extensive experience in working with the Government and Public bodies. It has recently helped the District Administration of Bardhaman in designing and developing a mobile application known as ‘Smart Bardhaman’ for the citizens of the district. The citizen governance app was launched by Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee. We have even been a part of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s visionary project ‘Digital India’. Team Indus Net Technologies has designed and developed the citizen governance mobile app ‘MyGov’, which was launched by the Prime Minister himself during the opening ceremony of ‘Digital India Week’. Aimed specifically at increasing the ease with which any member can interact with the Chamber, ICC decided to give its old website a refreshed and simplified look, combined with enhanced content & improved search functionality allowing members and even non-members to interact with the Chamber online very easily & in a better manner. Keeping this user experience firmly in mind and to make the website compatible with modernized browsers and mobile devices, team Indus Net(INT.) has redesigned the ICC website using HTML5. The restyled website boasts a modern, colourful design with easy navigation. It now showcases the happenings at different states separately and one can check them from the main website itself. New additions are event booking section with payment gateway integration and media section; and all of these newly added features enable members to submit event registrations, give access to newsletters and publications, help to check events calendar & much more directly from their own offices. To add onto this, members would be able to book auditoriums and reception rooms for business meetings & events at the chambers directly through this website shortly. Also, on the way is the mobile version of the same website for more accessibility. While giving the old ICC website the desired look, we have worked closely with Indian Chamber of Commerce. As it is rightly said by our Founder and CEO, Mr. Abhishek Rungta, “Digital media will soon empower each one of us to participate and act in the governance of our nation.” Team INT has once again given a new shape to the notion of citizens taking an active hand in governing themselves after the successful development of SMS based Poll Management System for Chief Electoral Office of West Bengal and MyGov app for the Government of India. As more cities and towns are exploring the benefits of digital gadgets, such tools are fast becoming a platform for civic engagement as well. The rolling innovation of mobile apps is radically lowering the cost of collaboration and the distance between the government and the citizens they serve. Besides, one can also view their grievance status through a unique registration User ID that is auto-generated once a complaint is lodged. In addition, information on different Government schemes including ‘Minority Scholarships’, ‘Vocational and Industrial Training’ or ‘Kanyashree’ can be accessed through this extremely user-friendly mobile app. Without a shadow of doubt, the citizens of Bardhaman now have better transparency, when it comes to reporting their concerns about the problems in the district. To add to this, Mr. Rungta also mentioned about how Smartphone applications are becoming crucial in conveying public welfare plans and bringing transparency in the administrative sector. Yet another proud moment for all of us at Indus Net Technologies(INT.)! Team INT. is proud to be a part of the much talked-of campaign “Digital India”, initiated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. Held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium of New Delhi on 1st July, 2015, this is the visionary program of Shri Narendra Modi, organized to present the Government of India’s initiative for digitizing the country. This initiative is believed to take India to a new height where the country would have an economy with connected knowledge and strong leadership. This Digital India initiative is even expected to enhance the collaboration between the Government and tech companies. In fact, many of the big players like the Aditya Birla Group, the Bharti Group etc. have already started playing a significant role in the digitalization of the country of India. As the entire IT industry is highly banking on this visionary program of Shri Narendra Modi, Indus Net Technologies(INT.), in association with the National Informatics Centre, proudly contributes to this initiative by developing the mobile app for MyGov.in. Though we have got a number of Government projects like the development of websites for Lok Sabha, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Ministry of Tourism, NIMHANS and many more to our credit, however, being a part of the Digital Media initiative is a bit more special.
