More Visits from London!

Last week was a very busy for all of us at INT- Kolkata. We were visited by two distinct clients from London. First was Malcolm, who was with one of the top insurers in UK and his purpose of visit was to finalize the architecture of the system that we are going to develop for his company. It will be load-balanced, clustered network that will deal with tons of traffic. The system design was bit complicated but in the end we pulled it off well. On a personal note, Malcolm is man who knows his business and his wine very well. He even gave me a crash course on wine tasting. It was a fantastic experience! Second was Steven. He runs a IT consulting company in the UK and his current project deals with one of the major golf tournament. His purpose of visit was sort out some project issues and finalize the scope of the project. Steven has great sense of humor and its almost impossible not to enjoy his company. In all the trip for both these gentlemen lasted for 5 days and it was lot of hard work and lot of fun (after work! :D). The only regret remained that we could not find SkySports over here so they had to miss the big Rugby Match. The silver lining with the cloud was that they still got to see the Mens United football match.

Selecting a CMMi consulting partner

At Indus Net Technologies, we have been internally discussing about implementing a more software specific Quality Management system (QMS) since 2004. Capability Maturity Model (CMM) from Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) was on top of our mind as this is a standard quality process followed by all the top offshore service providers. We started talking to several consultants who can help us in process improvement in a way that it helps us in delivering better quality software to our clients and also benefit Indus Net Technologies by bringing about a much more disciplined way of writing software. The first thing was to allocate a budget for the whole initiative. If you go by book, it sounds like a big investment because most of the consultancies quoted us around $20K to $35K for their services. However, on closer examination it was clear that the actual cost of “unaccounted” expenses that are supposed to go behind the scene is at least 3-4 times of the consulting fees. And the best part of it is that majority of the expense is an ongoing expense. It soon became clear that we cannot move in this direction unless we have a set allocated budget of our annual revenue (which we cannot compromise under any circumstances) to go towards our quality management processes, the whole effort will be futile and will not evolve as we expect. The biggest challenge was to make sure that the company can continuously afford the cost year on year! This whole thing delayed our initiative till mid 2006, when we found that we are ready for SEI CMM model. The next question was the level that we should target. I had an idea that if the sponsoring organization wants, they can opt for the highest level i.e. Level 5 and achieve that. However the picture became very clear when we spoke to few reputed consultants – all of them spoke that the realistic goal is to achieve Level 3. So the goal for 2007 was set to SEI CMM Level 3. Now, I was facing the toughest question – Which consultant to opt for? All the agencies are so different in their construct, approach, merits and demerits that the entire analysis leaves you puzzled. Add on – a bad headache at the end of the day. One consultant is providing a very personalized service with a hands-on approach while some have the top consultants who will provide best practices from their experience in several organizations. One consultant was known to almost everyone, whereas the other one was not even known to my peer companies! One consultant will tailor training for individual employees and do 1-2-1 session to make sure that they understand the concepts well, whereas the other one has great trainers and one of the best quality training materials in the industry. The call is a tough one! As of 29th December, I am still pondering about my choices and doing a detailed analysis. I am sitting and mapping these organizations with Indus Net Technologies and trying to find the best match. We will collectively take a call on 31st December and sign up our partner for our journey into CMMi. Will definitely keep you updated. Abhishek

Beware of copycats

Hello Friends, I founded Indus Net Technologies in 1997 with goal to reach out and serve small and medium sized businesses globally by fulfilling their internet service needs and empowering them to be competitive and profitable. We innovated and diversified at a blazing speed to provide several successful service brands targetted towards the small and medium sized enterprises. These brands offered unmatched value for money and therefore attracked thousands of business owners who entrusted their business with us. Inspired by our success, several copy-cat sites are mushrooming everywhere. Though we believe that imitation is the best form of flattery, we have no choice but to take stern actions (including lawsuit) against these copycats. Most of these companies have copied our sites word-to-word. In fact some of them are lazy enough to leave our name / phone number on their sites! I was just wondering how someone can stoop so low. Anyways, they can copy our site copy, but they cannot copy the quality, committment, technical knowledge, experience and infrastructure support that we consistently deliver to our clients. By copying the content, they are not only committing a crime under Copyright Act, but also misguiding consumers who want to order the original service offered by an Indus Net Technologies service brand. It is very important that you, as a consumer, make proper enquiries about these companies before you give them your business. Most of them are fly-by-night operators and their infrastructure related claims are hollow and spineless. Do verify them before you trust them with your valuable business. If you are in doubt about any particular brand and want to confirm its association with  Indus Net Technologies, please feel free to send an email to talash@talash.net. If you are already dealing with any such organization, feel free to contact us to verify the truth, which you can yourself make out with the evidences we have. Dedicated Hiring Model Offers Superior Benefit to Traditional Project Based Offshore Outsourcing

Indus Net Technologies (www.talash.net) today announced that it is getting tremendous response to its dedicated hiring model, which offers vastly superior benefits over the traditional project based outsourcing. (PRWEB) June 21, 2006 — Indus Net Technologies, an offshore web design and development outsourcing company reported that its ‘dedicated hiring’ program is proving very effective for small and medium sized businesses that are exploring outsourcing as a strategy to compete effectively in existing marketplace. “A traditional fixed-cost, fixed-time based outsourcing model forces a business to think short-term!” said Abhishek Rungta, Founder/CEO of Indus Net Technologies. “Quality and client satisfaction take a back seat, as the focus shifts towards ensuring profitability on the project at hand. Many small and medium sized companies who outsource to popular offshore programming destinations like India and China face this acute problem” he added. The classic model of project-based engagements requires the principal to have a rough estimate of the development period and a well-defined project specification so that they can agree on the cost of development with the vendor. This model has a few important limitations: It is difficult to estimate time and effort as the project scope is constantly changing in this fast paced business environment. The entire process of finding vendors, drafting detailed specifications, estimating the project cost, finalizing and managing a contract can be time consuming. This becomes critical in time-sensitive projects. The focus shifts from ensuring quality and client satisfaction to managing the project scope and profitability. The principal does not control manpower and module allocation and hence it is difficult to ensure that post-kick-off priorities are accepted by the vendor. A dedicated hiring model offers several advantages: Projects’ scope can be incrementally defined as the sponsor gains experience and gets a clear vision of the system with time. Option to offload labor-intensive jobs like coding and design while sponsor can focus on delivering more value to clients in terms of consultancy and system design. Flexibility of redeploying the team on another higher priority project or module of the same project based on changing market situation. Fixed monthly cost with guarantee of minimum work hours. It is like having own workforce without the overheads and at a much lower cost. Provision to scale up or down at a very short notice without having to worry about labor laws. Small and medium sized companies with several projects benefit the most with dedicated hiring options because they can recruit a mix of talent and managers who can work on the different projects on rotation basis as and when required. The client also gets regular progress report rather than get a one-time delivery at the end of development cycle when it might be too late to change features or components. Similar options already exist for large corporations. However small and medium sized businesses never got such a flexible option packaged as an easy-to-use system. This service is currently being used by companies ranging from startups to insurance and publishing giants across USA, Europe and Australia. “This ‘dedicated hiring model’ is set to revolutionize the way outsourcing works for small and medium sized businesses. Asking for fixed price quotes may soon become a thing of the past. Our clients are already saving an additional 27% on their offshore outsourcing budgets” signed off Abhishek.
